(Arlington, TX)  —  A man who drowned in a flash flood on Friday night is being identified as a UT Arlington graduate student.

Officials say 23-year-old Alan Amaya was working on a PhD in mathematics.  Campus police say they were notified of a possible drowning in a creek on the west side of the campus late Friday night.  The Arlington Fire Department later recovered Amaya’s body.  Amaya was reportedly walking on campus when he was swept away.

A statement from UTA points out that the area had “significant flash flooding” at the time.  An investigation into Amaya’s drowning is underway.  A go fund me account has been set up to help his family with funeral expenses.
