(WEATHERFORD, TX) – The City of Weatherford may have finally put a rest to the great chicken debate.
According to the Weatherford Democrat, the city council has voted 3-2, to pass an ordinance allowing backyard chickens in the city limits. In August, the council voted down that same proposal, however at a meeting earlier this month, some council members suggested they revisit the issue. The new ordinance requires that chicken coops and pens be 25 feet from the property line and 50 feet away from any neighboring property or commercial building. Residents are allowed no more than 4 chickens at homes that sit on an acre or less.
A pro-urban chicken group that started the Facebook campaign “The chicken came first duh any other questions” were not happy with the restrictions laid out in the new ordinance and plan to continue their petitions.
