(ITALY, TX) – The driver that hit an Ellis County police officer is expected to face a misdemeanor charge over the incident.

A spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety said the Italy officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being hit by a pickup on I-35E near the Highway 34 interchange Monday morning.  The officer was reportedly cleaning debris from the roadway when he was hit.  State troopers say the pickup driver did slam on the brakes before hitting the officer, who was standing on the right shoulder of the Northbound lanes at the time.

Following the accident, the DPS urged people to pay attention while they’re out on the roads.
