(Austin, TX) —  A bill that would make Selena’s birthday a state holiday is now before the legislature.

Dallas-area Democratic Representative Ana-Maria Ramos filed House Bill 2492 on Tuesday.  The bill would designate April 16th as “Selena Quintanilla Perez Day” in honor of the Queen of Tejano, who was shot and killed 24 years ago by the former head of her fan club.

If the bill becomes law, it will take effect on September 1st.  It would join August 27th, “LBJ Day,” as the only other state holiday honoring a particular person.
