(Austin, TX) — A pair of bills filed in the state legislature would require voter approval to any changes to monuments that honor historical figures.

A House bill and a Senate bill would bar the state, city or county governments from tearing down or moving memorials or statues, or renaming places, buildings, roads or bridges, without permission of the voters.

The House bill’s author says it’s an attempt to keep “political correctness” from being able to “erase our history,” including parts we may find uncomfortable, such as the Confederacy.
