(Austin, TX) — A five-thousand-dollar annual pay raise for Texas teachers has cleared the state Senate and is on its way to the House.
The Senate unanimously passed the bill on Monday, after amending it to include school librarians. If passed, the bill would cost about four-billion-dollars over the next two years. In last month’s State of the State speech, Republican Governor Greg Abbott declared teacher pay to be an emergency item. Republican Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick had made it a priority as well.
The bill may have a harder time making it through the House.
