(Austin, TX) — A Texas state representative is filing a bill to bring back the Prison Rodeo in Huntsville.
The house bill by Representative Ernest Bailes, a Republican from San Jacinto County, would revive the annual event, which was held from 1931 to 1986. The rodeo raised enough revenue to pay for itself, and subsidized an educational and recreational fund that provided inmates with perks from dentures to textbooks to Christmas turkeys.
The rodeo was discontinued because of structural problems with the stadium, which was later torn down.
