(Austin, TX) — State lawmakers may pass legislation to repay or forgive student debt for college graduates who become police officers.
Bills in both the state House and Senate would help college students who choose a law enforcement career, as well as the departments who try to retain them instead of losing them to higher-paying jobs. The measures would offer repayment help to officers who have worked in their departments for at least a year.
Student debt would be repaid at a rate of 20-percent for every year the recipient works as an officer.
