(Austin, TX) — The state legislature is considering a bill that would expand the protection of historical monuments, including Confederate markers.
The bill would leave the decision as to whether to remove a monument in the hands of the city or county where it’s located, subject to certain age restrictions. Language specifically protecting Confederate markers has been removed from the bill, but all Dixie era markers are likely to be old enough to be exempt from removal.
The bill’s supporters say removing monuments is an attempt to erase history.
