(Austin, TX)  —  A bill to outlaw red-light cameras statewide now has the tentative approval of the Texas House.

An amendment would allow local governments with cameras already in place to keep using them until their contracts with camera vendors expire.  Many police officers and city officials object to the bill, claiming the cameras cut down on fatal crashes and generate revenue.  Camera opponents question the constitutionality of the devices and don’t like their 75-dollar fines.

A similar version of the bill is being considered by the Senate.
