(Austin, TX) —  A Senate bill to allow licensed handgun owners to be armed in places of worship has the preliminary approval of the Texas House.

The bill passed Monday repeals a section of state law that prohibits the carrying of guns in “churches, synagogues, or other places of worship.”  Under the new bill, churches would still be allowed to bar firearms from their premises by providing notice.

The Senate has already approved the bill, which will go to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk once the House grants its final approval.
