(Austin, TX) — Package theft will officially become a felony in Texas on September 1st.
Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill that redefines criminal penalties for mail theft in the state. The new law says mail theft from fewer than ten people is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine. But mail theft with more than ten victims will be a felony that could mean a prison term of up to ten years.
If identifying information is stolen, or the victims are disabled or elderly, more penalties will result.
