(Ellis, County, Tx) – An Appeals Court has upheld the conviction of former Maypearl Police Chief Kevin Coffey.

In 2017 an Ellis County jury found Coffey guilty on charges of sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child.  He was sentenced to 40 years in prison.  According to the Cleburne Times Review, Coffey recently appealed the sentence on the basis that it was “grossly disproportionate to the crime and inappropriate to the offender,” according to court records.  The 10th Court of Appeals disagreed and last month affirmed Coffey’s 40 year sentence.

Coffey, who’s now 53, also faces charges in Johnson County though, in light of the appellate court affirming his 40-year sentence, those charges will likely not be pursued, Johnson County District Attorney Dale Hanna said on Monday.  Coffey still, however, faces charges of indecency with a minor in Hill County.
