(Fort Worth, Tx) – 10-year-old Lily Mae Avant has died, one week after contracting a rare brain eating Amoeba while swimming in the Brazos River.

WFAA TV reports the little girl died early Monday morning at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, where she had been placed in a medically induced coma after being diagnosed with amoebic meningoencephalitis.  Doctors believe Lily was exposed to the infection by getting water up her nose while swimming Labor Day weekend in the Brazos River, near Valley Mills in Bosque County.  Her family says it started with a headache and fever, but that the girl quickly became unresponsive and was flown to Cook Children’s.

The Naegleria Fowleri amoeba can often be found in warm freshwater like ponds according to the Texas Department of Health Services and it’s almost always fatal.  Lily Mae is the second North Texas child to die from the infection in the last 9 years.
