(Austin, TX)  —  A proposed state constitutional amendment would set aside part of the sales tax from sporting goods stores for parks and historical sites.

A spokeswoman for the Texas Coalition for State Parks says it’s not a new tax, but a requirement that existing tax revenues are spent as intended under a 1993 law that the legislature hasn’t always followed.  Many of the state’s parks were built in the 1930s and their infrastructure needs upgrading.

Proposition Five is one of ten proposed constitutional amendments Texans will vote on next month.
