(Fort Worth, TX) — American Airlines plans to eliminate thousands of jobs amid a near-shutdown of air travel by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Fort Worth-based carrier will reduce its management and support staff by about 5,100 jobs, or about 30% of the total. The company announced Wednesday that nearly 39-thousand other employees are taking early retirement or partially paid leave.
Laid-off workers will be paid to the end of September, to comply with the terms of nearly six-billion-dollars in federal payroll aid.
