(Austin, TX) — University of Texas at Austin is going to make changes to campus but keep its fight song.
UT leadership announced today it was renaming Joe Jamail Field at the family’s request to honor Heisman winners Ricky Williams and Earl Campbell. A monument to UT’s first black undergraduates will also be erected and university officials are promising to create programs aimed at recruiting and retaining black students.
UT will not get rid of “The Eyes of Texas” fight song which had been recently criticized for being performed by white students in blackface during the early 1900’s. The song is actually about the Longhorn’s rivalry with the Texas Aggies.
The changes are being made following demands by UT football players last month.
