(Weatherford, TX) — The Confederate statue at the Parker County Courthouse isn’t going anywhere for now.
County Commissioners voted unanimously (5-0) Thursday to leave the monument on the courthouse lawn in Weatherford. Before voting, several Commissioner said they had heard from numerous constituents in favor of keeping the monument. Last weekend, a few dozen protesters marched to the statue to call for its removal, only to be met by hundreds of counter protesters who say they were there to protect it from vandalism.
The United Daughters of the Confederacy put the statue in place more than 100 years ago. The UDC still owns the statue and would like to relocate it, to keep it from being damaged, as soon as they can raise the funds to do that.
