(Austin, TX) — Texans can expect higher food prices as a result of damage to Texas agriculture caused by last week’s winter storm.
The final cost isn’t known yet, but it’s reported to be at least a billion-dollars so far. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller says record prices for groceries may come at a time when Texas residents can least afford them. Miller says 300-million-dollars in citrus crops were destroyed in the Rio Grande Valley, including 100% of the oranges.
Fortunately, 80% of the grapefruit had already been harvested.
