(Austin, TX) — The University of Texas has released a deep dive on the history of its fight song, “The Eyes of Texas.”
Some have called for it to be banished, because of ties to minstrel shows. The report, out today, found that it was first performed in 1903 by white students in blackface. But the committee believes there was “no racist intent”, rather the phrase stood for the University watching graduates who were expected to do great things out in the world. The report also found there was no direct connection to Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
At least 75 donors threatened to pull their donations to the school if the song was canceled.
