(Fort Worth, TX)  —  The Fort Worth Zoo is using in vitro fertilization with frozen sperm to produce endangered Houston toads for the first time.

There are fewer than 400 of the amphibians left in the wild, so the zoo is trying to maximize their population.  Two toads created by IVF were hatched in February.

The gestation period for the Houston toads is only about a month.
