(Austin, TX) — The Texas Senate is passing an elections bill following a 15-hour filibuster.
Senators voted along party lines Thursday on Senate Bill 1 with Republicans saying it’s needed to make sure voter fraud doesn’t happen. Houston Democrat Carol Alvarado told colleagues the bill would start Texas back on the road to slavery and chip away at democracy. She also said it added barriers for minority voters, seniors, and those with disabilities and makes it easier to intimidate people at the polls.
A companion bill is in the Texas House, which is currently at a standstill due to a lack of a quorum.
House Democrats went to Washington, DC last month to prevent a vote on a similar bill in the first special session. It’s not known how many of them are still in DC.
