(Austin, TX) — The State of Texas is facing a lawsuit over the proposed redistricting maps that are expected to be approved by Governor Abbott.
Ten Latino rights groups and five individuals filed suit against the governor and Texas Secretary of State Jose Esparza claiming the maps violate the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The lawsuit claims the maps do not reflect the growth of the Hispanic population in Texas, and unlawfully dilute the voting strength of Latinos.
The plaintiffs are asking a federal court to toss the maps out.
