(Houston, TX) — Health officials say the discovery of Houston’s omicron variant happened in a wastewater sample.
The Houston Health Department reported on Monday that the variant turned up in wastewater samples collected late last month from eight of the city’s 39 wastewater treatment plants. The health department regularly tests the city’s wastewater for coronavirus and its variants.
Dr. David Persse, the city’s chief medical officer, says the arrival of omicron is no cause for panic, and encourages residents to get vaccinations and boosters.
