(Austin, TX) —   19 Austin police officers have been indicted following a state grand jury investigation on allegations of excessive force in connection with the 2020 BLM protests.

Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza believes many of those hurt were “innocent bystanders.”  According to the Austin American Statesman, attorneys for the officers targeted by the investigation, said the officers faced attacks — including having objects such as water bottles and rocks thrown at them — that justified their use of force.  The number of indictments is among the highest for police in any U.S. city.

The announcement comes the same day the Austin City Council approved ten-million-dollars in settlements to two people injured by law enforcement during those protests.
