(San Antonio) — The Texas Department of Public Safety is reporting that 2021 was the second deadliest year on Texas roads in state recorded history.
Nearly 4,500 people lost their lives. A spokesperson with TxDOT cited speeding, driving under the influence and not wearing a seatbelt were leading factors in traffic fatalities. The increase in deaths reflects a nationwide trend.
TxDOT said around 20-thousand people died in car accidents in the first half of 2021, which was an over 18% increase from the previous year.
