(Fort Worth, TX) — Republicans in Tarrant County will vote today on whether to oust their vice chairman because he’s Muslim.
Shahid Shafi is a Fort Worth-area trauma surgeon who was appointed vice-chairman of the county GOP six months ago. Dorrie O’Brien, a local precinct chairwoman, is leading the effort to have Shafi removed. She argues that she can’t be sure where his loyalties lie because he’s Muslim. Shafi says he’s proud to be an American and a Republican and has never pushed to implement Islamic law, one of O’Brien’s concerns.
The state GOP has passed a resolution re-affirming the party’s commitment to freedom of religion.
