(Weatherford, TX) – After a 6-year absence, the Weatherford Police Department has brought back its K9 unit through a grant program.

The department says the new Hungarian born German Shepard named Bruce and his K9 handler Officer Chris Bumpas just returned from nine weeks of training in Houston.  The Weatherford Democrat reports that Bruce and Officer Bumpas were quickly called into action, assisting officers in searching for a suspect that fled on foot after a short vehicle pursuit.  After an hour-long track, K9 Bruce found the person hiding in a heavily wooded area of Mockingbird Lane and he was taken into custody without incident.

WPD was one of three North Texas departments to receive a dual-purpose narcotics and patrol K9 officer.
