UPDATE:   Several horses were killed and almost two dozen homes evacuated Wednesday due to an ethanol train derailment in Southeast Fort Worth.  Five tank cars burst into flames after the Union Pacific train jumped the track near Echo Lake.    Three horses from a nearby property were lost in the fire, in addition to an outbuilding and a Fort Worth Fire Department vehicle.  The FWFD mobile command unit went up in flames after coming in contact with a power line.  No injuries to people were reported and there’s no word yet on what caused the train to derail.  The NTSB is investigating.

(Fort Worth, Tx) – Fort Worth Fire Fighters have been on the scene of an overnight train derailment that forced the evacuation of homes in the immediate area.

The Union Pacific freight train went off the tracks around 1 am at Yuma and East Berry St in southeast Fort Worth.  Five overturned rail cars containing Ethanol caught fire, which has caused a Hazmat situation.  Because of the fumes caused by the fire, nearby homes in the area had to be evacuated.  Residents were taken to a nearby school to wait it out.  Fort Worth Fire says an outbuilding at a home near the derailment burned to the ground, however no injuries have been reported.  Fire crews are still on the scene and ask people to avoid the area.

While on the scene, the FWFD mobile command unit accidentally came in contact with a power line and caught fire.

Before the derailment, the fire department had tweeted that they had already responded to 45 weather related calls.  By early morning, MedStar says they responded to 35 vehicle accidents since the rain started last night.
