(Austin, TX) — Red light cameras are now banned in Texas.  On Saturday, Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill that the legislature passed last month to phase out the cameras by requiring cities and counties to end their contracts with red light camera vendors.

According to Bedford Representative Jonathan Stickland, there’s about five cities unable to get out of their contracts early and will have to wait until it expires.  The City of Fort Worth has a contract that runs through 2026, but it has an opt out clause in the case of a state-wide ban.

Lawmakers argued the cameras are unconstitutional because they place the burden of proving innocence on the driver.
