(Austin, TX) — Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced movie theaters will be allowed to reopen on Friday, along with restaurants, retail stores and museums.
Abbott said that the proclamation is permission, not an order to open for business. The governor added that theaters and other establishments would be allowed to only operate at 25 percent capacity, and it may not be economically feasible for some places to even open.
However, Variety reports major chains aren’t expected to restart business until at least July.
Alamo Drafthouse says they will not be opening theaters on Friday. The Austin-based company’s Facebook page says reopening will call for extensive training with new equipment and procedures, which can’t be done “casually or quickly” if it’s going to be done right. No word yet as to when the next showtime at the Alamo Drafthouse will be.
