(Austin, TX) — The STAAR test will not be a factor in some grade promotions for the upcoming school year.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Monday he was waiving the requirement for fifth and eighth graders although they’ll still have to take it in May with other grades.  Abbott says the waiver means students will have fewer disruptions to the school year due to the coronavirus pandemic.  Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath says he doesn’t want students to repeat a grade due to just one test score.

The state will still use STAAR test results to grade school performance.
