(Fort Worth, TX) — Fort Worth city officials find themselves in the unusual position of owing the state a pile of money because of a tax mistake.
City council heard a report last week explaining that the city has to repay nearly 19-million-dollars to the state because a single taxpayer overpaid taxes from 2008 to 2017. Mayor Betsy Price says the city didn’t know about the problem until the state comptroller had settled with the taxpayer four years later.
City leaders have to sort out how to pay the state more than 12-million-dollars from the general fund and more than six-million from the Crime Control and Prevention District.
