(Southlake, TX) — A North Texas aviation pioneer made a long-awaited trip into space today.

Wally Funk was a female NASA astronaut candidate in the 1960s, but the women of NASA never made it into orbit in the early programs.  Funk, who’s from Grapevine, was on board Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s New Shepard spacecraft when it launched from Van Horn, Texas this morning.

At 82-years-old Wally became the oldest person ever to fly on a spacecraft.
