Justice Dept Suing Texas Over Abortion Law

(Washington, DC) — The Justice Department is suing Texas over its fetal heartbeat law.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said the law is “clearly unconstitutional” under longstanding U.S. Supreme Court precedent. The high court recently declined to block implementation of the Texas law, which bans abortions after a heartbeat can be detected.

It also lets individuals pursue civil lawsuits against clinics and anyone who “aids and abets” the abortion, including insurance reimbursement.
