(Eagle Pass, TX) — Officials are identifying a missing Texas National Guardsman who tried to save two illegal immigrants who appeared to be drowning while crossing the Rio Grande River on Friday.

The Texas Military Department says 22-year-old Specialist Bishop Evans of Arlington is assigned to Operation Lone Star.  A search continued on Sunday after Evans went missing near Eagle Pass.  The Texas Rangers say the two illegals are suspected drug smugglers and are now in the custody of the Border Patrol.

Evans graduated from Mansfield High School in 2018 before joining the military.
