(Undated) — Multiple wildfires continue to burn in North Texas.
The Chalk Mountain Fire in Somervell County grew overnight to 6,000 acres with only 10% containment. During a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Texas A&M Forest Service officials said about 12 structures have burned so far. Somervell County has issued a disaster declaration to help get state resources to fight the fire. At this time, the fire is not considered to be a threat to Comanche Peak Nuclear Plant, which sits near the Squaw Creek Reservoir. Some camps in the area have been evacuated and Dinosaur Valley State Park is currently closed. The Red Cross has opened a shelter at the Somervell County Expo Center in Glen Rose for those impacted by the fire.
The Forest Service is also battling what’s been named as the 1148 Fire, which runs along FM 1148 on the Northwest side of Possum Kingdom Lake in Palo Pinto County. It’s burned 500 acres and as of this morning is 15% contained. At least 8 homes have burned.
In Wichita and Archer Counties, the West Bend Fire shut down Hwy 287 for several hours Tuesday, burning an estimated 5,000 acres. As of this morning, the Forest Service said they had stopped forward progression and the fire is now 50% contained. More than 50 homes were evacuated in the town of Jolly.
